Book: Worm or Snob

Long ago, I embraced the fact that I am indeed, one of "those" people in a lot of ways.
Especially when it involves reading material.

Books, I don't just read. I devour.

Ever since that fateful summer of '94 when my imminent switch from public to private school proved that I had indeed spent all of kindergarten learning how to make macaroni art, trade my applesauce for a fruit roll-up at lunch, and play a mean triangle solo during music class.

Those placement tests made sure that I would spend the next three months buckling down every day with PB&Js and phonics, with a few super soaker breaks in between.

By September, I read "Charlotte's Web" all by myself and became the self-proclaimed captain of the blue reading group in Mrs. T's 1st grade class.

Followed by an intense bout through the thick spine of "Little Women," in preparation for Christian Bale. I mean, the movie adaptation. of the book.
with Christian Bale.

After, in which I spent the following summer belting out Celine Dion's "To Love You More" and shaking my tiny fists at the sky wondering why I hadn't been born 14 years earlier.

Christian Bale.

The stuff legends are made of, right there.

...

All this to say,

I need some vacation lit.

Any suggestions?

{and for the sake of not making Louisa May Alcott roll over in her grave, let's not go down the Fifty Shades of Grey road}

xoxo

Do you like crime novels? I would recommend any book by Hakan Nesser, Henning Mankell, Yrsa Sigurdardottir, Arnaldur Indridason, Helene Tursten, Ake Edwardson. I love them!

What kind of books are you looking to read!?
I recently Read a Book called How to Sleep with a Movie Star, not anything about really teaching you how to sleep with one, which was a cute easy read.
Or another The Secrets of Dresses which was very cute as well!!
I have a book list on my blog with lots more and some reviews:

Glad that I'm not the only one who doesn't want to get near 50 Shades with a 50 foot pole. :) :)

I love the books in your stack! My book club is reading Gone Girl and it will definitely keep your attention. Also if you haven't read The Help or the Forgotten Garden those are 2 of my all time favorites!!!

I just graduated college with my English degree and I was FINALLY able to read Gone with the Wind. If you haven't read it yet- I highly suggest it. You might also like Divergent by Veronica Roth (since you have Hunger Games in your stack of books). It's a slow start, but the story gets better. Anything by Phillipa Gregory is usually amazing... the list goes on and on!
Oh, and 50 Shades of Grey is ridiculous and an insult to literature and all English majors (the main character is an English major and she is unbearable and makes me cringe). Awful "book". I couldn't even bring myself to finish it.

Roald Dahl's "grown up" fiction (not like dirty adult novels, but his stuff FOR adults)... My Uncle Oswald and his short stories are amazing.

Also, my favorite summer read ever was Shantaram. It was the perfect escape into India for a thousand pages or so and I read it all across Europe one summer.

And bless you for displeasure in all things 50 Shades. And for the nod to LMA (ever read her novel A Long Fatal Love Chase? Oh man, do it - it's titillating)

I'm usually a non-fiction girl because I feel like if I'm reading something, I want to get some cool facts/knowledge about the world out of it. That being said, BOOO to boring non-fiction.
SO, a FICTION book I recently discovered and devoured is The Name of the Wind. That preface was to emphasize that though this reads like a fiction (after the initial getting-into-the-story hump, I lost myself for a week in it's pages), it still sparked a myriad of over-the-dinner-table conversations.

Auto-biograpraphy: A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.

Intelligent romantic read: The Time Traveler's Wife (I loathed the movie... it made it look so simple-romance).

Thriller: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Funny: Me Talk Pretty One Day

I just finished a self-published set of books called Wool Omnibus, and it was surprisingly pretty great. Post-apocalyptic, hunger games set under ground sort of vibe. Cheap for kindle.

My favorite author is Jodi Picoult :D If you like the crime/drama/complicated characters and plot line kind of book then this would definitely suit you :D The only thing that gets me is the huge court scene in the middle. Sometimes it's good, other times its so-so :/ Either way, I've read 99% of her books and one day I'm going to be able to say that I've read all of them :D

Rules of Civility. First book by an unlikely author about some 20-somethings in NYC in the 30's.

Let's Pretend This Never Happened. Memoir by funny blogger Jenny Lawson.

Half Broke Horses. Beautiful, true story written by the main character's granddaughter about growing up as a progressive, daring women during WWI and beyond in desert-land Arizona.

I think I just found my soulmate. I'm book obsessed and I'm getting an English major to prove it! haha also, I have some majorly harsh feelings toward Fifty Shades as well.... like, don't even get me started.

If you like some literary fiction, I just read "The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake" and I really liked it! It's by Aimee Bender. Also, if you like young adult fiction, I'm reading "The Mysterious Benedict Society." My last beach read was "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" which I'm obsessed with.

So glad I stumbled on this blog! Thanks for commenting on mine :)
